The Rise and Rise of Infographics

Infographics are one of the coolest ways to show the world what'’s going on with your business. Who wants to look at a bar graph or pie chart anymore when you can better understand something with a clear and colorful pictorial? These data-filled graphics illustrate information in a fun way, making the content more memorable for future reference.

Most of us are visual and gravitate toward pictures over text. A compelling image is more likely to make someone read the accompanying text than vice versa. The next time you’re surfing the Internet, think about the Web sites which draw you in on a regular basis. Chances are, they all have significant things in common. Apple, Google and Microsoft may offer different services and merchandise, but their Web sites share certain characteristics: Recognizable logos (who doesn’t know the silver apple graphic?), the use of primary colors and easily identifiable content from adults using phones to students gathered around a friend's laptop.

In the June 2012 issue, More magazine used an infographic in lieu of the usual Editor’s Letter column. Readers got to take a peek inside the brain of Editor-in-Chief Lesley Jane Seymour and discover what thoughts zoomed through on a typical day. Kittens, Ryan Gosling, and margaritas with her best friend all made her very connected to her readers--more so than a well-written blurb minus images.

If your organization is due for a Web content refresher, it’s wise to consider the inclusion of an infographic or two. Not only can they potentially boost traffic, but you also increase your chances of the right client finding your company, which is never a bad thing.
